Ramona was a hugely popular novel, written by Helen Hunt Jackson in 1884. Presenting a romantic view of early California, the book centers around Ramona, an orphan of Native American descent, and the racial discrimination and other hardships she endured. Although the story and its characters were purely fictional, tourists flocked to the region to see the places described in the book, with countless postcards produced featuring the locations. Reissued over 300 times, the book has never been out of print.
